About Us

OpenMTP is a free and open-source Android File Transfer application for macOS.

Why I built OpenMTP

I started OpenMTP out of frustration, to make transferring files between a Mac and Android or other MTP devices easier and more reliable. The options available then were either limited, unreliable, expensive, or simply frustrating to use.

Google's Android File Transfer app had its own limitations, including being unable to transfer files larger than 4GB, frequent disconnections, and not being able to rename files or folders on the device.

I searched for an application that solved these problems, but couldn't find one that worked the way I wanted. So I decided to build one myself.

What started as a personal project eventually grew much further than I expected. OpenMTP was released in 2018 and is now used by people in more than 170 countries, with over 1.4 million downloads and 7.4K GitHub stars.

Built with the community

I receive bug reports, suggestions, device compatibility reports, and feedback from users around the world. Many of the devices OpenMTP supports today are devices I don't own, so community testing has been an important part of improving the application.

I want to thank everyone who has contributed to OpenMTP, whether by improving the Kalam Kernel, the app, the documentation, or by testing and reporting issues.

OpenMTP is free, open-source, and ad-free. I now develop and maintain it independently, full-time.

The next generation of OpenMTP is currently in active development, with a new architecture and improvements to stability, performance, and device support.

Only download OpenMTP from the official sources: openmtp.ganeshrvel.com, github.com/ganeshrvel/openmtp and formulae.brew.sh/cask/openmtp. Copycat websites use the OpenMTP name, logo and redirect to other pages.
